Mike StevensFEHB Continuation Requirements
Keeping your Federal Employees Health Benefits in retirement requires meeting specific eligibility criteria and understanding coordination rules with Medicare.
The 5-Year Rule
You must be continuously enrolled in FEHB for 5 consecutive years immediately before retirement. This means no gaps in coverage, including periods covered under spouse's plans.
Immediate Retirement
You must retire on an immediate annuity (not deferred retirement) to continue FEHB. Postponed or deferred retirements don't qualify for health benefits continuation.
Plan Selection
Choose your retirement FEHB plan carefully during Open Season before retirement. You can change plans annually, but some restrictions apply for new enrollments.
Medicare Coordination
At age 65, Medicare becomes primary and FEHB secondary. Many plans offer enhanced benefits for Medicare enrollees, including waived deductibles and reduced copays.
